Identical AKA my first Hopkins

Identical by Ellen Hopkins

Twins. One Secret. Two lives. Two Identities. One Heart. How many souls?

My review:

This was my first Ellen Hopkins and I would just like to say that, oh, wow, I so get it now. I have read so many reviews, people saying how compelled they were to face the reality of their own lives after reading a Hopkins book. I really get that now. I think her books dish out a healthy dose of perspective for all us mere mortals. Things could be worse, more confusing, more painful, more lost then they already are.

I don’t want to spoil this book for you, so this won’t be long, but I want to say that if reports of Ellen’s sad, gritty work has turned you off, start here, with Identical. I was very wary going in. These books sound so ground in the dirt; sad and evil, even. After reading Identical, my suspicions are confirmed. These books are full of grief, addictions, mental illness, evil and pain. However, Hopkins includes the bright hope of redemption from the beginning, she just leaves it up to the character to take the chance for recovery and leaves her readers to cheer the heroines on.

I started reading all the poems back to myself after, the answers were right there, I couldn't believe I couldn't see it all for so long!
Ellen Hopkins' Identical is ingenious, I loved it and hated it, how appropriate. ;)

Notes on the Names: Kay and Ray; Kayleigh and Raeanne. Just more ingenious for you.

Thoughts on the Cover: All of the covers reflect the words, but I think the book is beautiful in it’s own way.

Lol congrats on reading your first Ellen Hopkins book. My favorite is Burned (you should check it out) but the only ones other than that that I have read is Crank, Glass and Fallout. I haven't read Identical yet, but it was one of the books on my list. Thanks for the review!

My first book from Ellen Hopkins was Crank I picked it up from sheer curiosity. It looked interesting, I though if I don't like it I can always put it down. So I sat down at the library and started reading it. I finished the book that day, I felt sad, amazed, surprised and so many emotions when I read it. It was a sad story even more so when you read the last few pages but still I knew she would be an author I would always look forward to reading. So far I haven't been disappointed with her work, I don't think I ever will. I hope you will pick up her other books soon and maybe enjoy them as much as I have.

as always ♥, Carol
