Blog Tour: Earthbound by Aprilynne Pike

We at Penguin pretty much can’t WAIT for everyone to read Aprilynne Pike’s latest book, Earthbound

To celebrate the start of a brand new saga, follow along the Earthbound blog tour to find out inside scoop from Aprilynne.

We’ll also reveal an image from our beautiful Earthbound fortune-video (yes, it’s a thing) at each stop.
Follow us all the way to the end, when we’ll reveal the full video on the Penguin Teen Tumblr!

I am so excited to be able to introduce your readers to my heroine, Tavia Michaels!

It’s been so interesting working with Tavia because she is truly defined by the person she is now, and who she used to be. (And in the first book she will have her life split again, into who she’s about to find out she really is! . . . Just to make things complicated.;) )

Tavia used to be a pretty normal girl, except that she was an exceptionally talented artist—in many mediums, but especially with painting. She lived in Michigan with her parents, middle class, nothing particularly standout. She has had a casual boyfriend or two, but nothing deeply committed or long-term. She’s tall and thin, with long, dark-brown hair and though she doesn’t compete in high school athletics, she likes non-competitive group sports—especially swimming. Mostly she was looking forward to graduating and going to art school. And if no one had found out who she was, I have no doubt that’s what would eventually have happened.

                                         But someone did.

At the end of Tavia’s junior year of high school she was contacted by a private school for artists and eventually that put her on the flight that leaves her as the sole survivor. As the book opens, we meet a Tavia who is very different from the girl we only see in memories and flashbacks. She has sustained a severe brain injury, is in physical therapy for a badly broken leg, emotional therapy for the loss of her parents, and is held fast by what her psychiatrist calls artists’ block

She’s still tall—though nowadays she tends to pull her shoulders forward and stoop a little to avoid attention. And her hair is short, just growing in after being shaved for brain surgery.

She’d still love to participate in sports, but these days walking without a limp is her main goal.

Her life, at the moment, is focused simply on survival. Mostly, emotionally.

Everything in her life has just changed. And, of course, as the exceptionally nice author I am, I am about to change everything againI’ve never really been an author who “tortures” her characters. But I find that, without meaning to, I really have done that to Tavia. Nothing in Tavia’s life can just be good. Everything goes wrong, so much of what she believes is true is a lie, and everyone she thinks she can trust betrays her . . . or dies. The upside of this is that I got a chance to create a character who is incredibly resilient! And who had no idea she could handle such tough things until they happened. She tackles thing with determination and a dry sense of humor and as she has evolved, I have slowly come to the realization that this is a girl I would totally want to be friends with if she was real. And that alone has made writing about her incredibly satisfying! And just wait until you see what she does in the next book. ;)

ABOUT EARTHBOUND:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike has created a heart-stopping romance built on a love triangle like you’ve never seen before and filled with epic stakes and a centuries-long conspiracy. Give it to fans of Beautiful Creatures and Nightshade!

Tavia Michaels is the sole survivor of the plane crash that killed her parents. When she starts to see strange visions of a boy she’s never spoken with in real life, she begins to suspect that there’s much about her past that she isn’t being told.

Tavia immediately searches for answers, desperate to determine why she feels so drawn to a boy she hardly knows. But when Tavia discovers that the aunt and uncle who took her in after her parents' death may have actually been responsible for the plane crash that killed them--and that she may have been the true intended victim--she flees for the safety of Camden, Maine, where the boy she sees in her visions instructs her to go.

Now, Tavia is on the run with no one to trust. No one, that is, except for her best friend and longtime crush, Benson. Tavia feels torn between the boy who mysteriously comes to her at night and the boy who has been by her side every step of the way. But what Tavia doesn't know is that the world is literally falling apart and that to save it she will have to unite with the boy in her visions. Only problem? To do so would mean rejecting Benson's love. And that's the one thing Tavia Michaels swore she'd never do.
