Honey, Baby, Sweetheart

Honey, Baby, Sweetheart by Deb Caletti

It is summer in the Northwest town of Nine Mile Falls, and sixteen year old Ruby McQueen, ordinarily dubbed The Quiet Girl, finds herself hanging out with gorgeous, rich, thrill-seeking Travis Becker. But Ruby is in over her head and begins risking more and more when she’s with him.

In an effort to keep Ruby occupied, Ruby’s mother, Ann, drags Ruby to the weekly book club she runs. When it is discovered that one of the group’s own members is the subject of the tragic love story tey are reading. Ann and Ruby spearhead a reunion between the long-ago lovers. But for Ruby, this mission turns out to be much more than just a roadtrip…

My review:

Does anyone else have this problem with Mrs. Caletti? You love the storyline and hate the actual plot points. I do too, some of the time, but Honey, Baby, Sweetheart is the absolute contradiction to that statement. It is, in fact, one of my very favorite books!

I want to tell you right now, if you are still reading, that the complicated plot outlined above really does not give the story justice in my eyes. Even the reunion between the star-crossed lovers is not an out of the blue plot point, it all works to enrich Ruby’s story! I loved that about this book, it was all centered around these women teaching Ruby that, in the words of one, Mrs. Deb Caletti, to “…not just be someone’s honey, baby, sweetheart.”

I really encourage you to choose this as your one “Caletti” if you are trying to decide which one to pick up. I believe that you will find yourself in a sun-light living room, you’ll see some dust underneath an adjacent table and you will hear the sound of chatter from women who can help you see your own worth. These characters are invaluable to me, and I hope they will prove themselves worthy in your eyes!

I think this message is simple and justified, what better reasons do you need to pick up a book?

Thoughts on the cover: Have you noticed all the changes to the Caletti covers?! I’ll post a picture as an example below, but I don’t like the new cover at all, though there are some new ones that I adore! I’ll put a sticker, or something, on my favorite of the two covers. The old cover of this book (which I have) is so beautiful!

Thanks for the review. I've never read anything by Caletti, and it's because I'm always interested by her plots, but when I read reviews they always say that the execution is a bit lacking. Still, this one sounds worthwhile, and if I pick one up, it'll be this one.

Don't read The Fortunes of Indigo Skye, do read this one, and The Nature of Jade, if you like Honey, Baby, Sweetheart.
