2012 Author Wrap-Up with P.J. Hoover

Today one of my favorite people, P.J. Hoover, author of the hotly-anticipated Solstice joins MPB to discuss her favorite bookish things of 2012!

GC: What is best book you read in 2012?

PJH: I’ve read so many great books this year that this is such a hard decision! So with that in mind, I’m going to cheat just a bit.

My favorite adult read was THE NAME OF THE WIND by Patrick Rothfuss. The world he created was so rich and deep, I wanted to truly step through a magic portal and live there.

As for young adult books, I loved every minute of reading the upcoming SPLINTERED by A. G. Howard. Aside from a captivating story, it had one of the most well done love triangles I have yet seen. I would wait in line for a sequel!

GC: What was your favorite thing you wrote in 2012?

PJH: My favorite thing I wrote was my blog post announcing my two book deal to Tor (for my young adult dystopian/mythology, SOLSTICE, and my middle grade Egyptian mythology, TUT). I’d been sitting on the news for five months, and it was so much fun to finally let it out. And of course, actually signing the contracts was pretty sweet, too. : )

GC: What was your biggest writing struggle in 2012, and how did you overcome it?

PJH: I have a new project I’ve been working on for the last year and a half, and there were a few times when revisions felt completely overwhelming. First, it’s dual point of view which was new for me. Stepping back and taking my time with the two stories lines took some serious patience. Second, there were so many changes to make. But the good thing is that I was totally on board with the ideas and knew the revisions would make the manuscript stronger. The funniest thing about being an author is that I know these challenges will come up again and again and again.

GC: What can readers expect from you in the new year?

PJH: In 2013, readers can look forward to the release of SOLSTICE! SOLSTICE is a story set in the future where global warming is killing everything on earth. This girl, Piper, opens a mysterious box on her eighteenth birthday, and all this mythology starts to surround her. Her best friend almost dies, she travels to the Underworld, and she falls head over heels for a totally hot guy (who may or may not be a Greek god). It was so much fun to write (and even to revise), and I’m really looking forward to sharing it with the world!

GC: Write down your 'Writing Resolution of 2013!'

PJH: Oh, wow! Good one! I haven’t yet thought about this. By the end of 2013, I’d love to have a completed draft of a new book. Maybe a sequel. Maybe a stand-alone. But whatever the case, I’d love something that has been through the first draft stage and is well into revision.
And of course, a book sale would be nice too : )

About Solstice:

Piper’s world is dying. Each day brings hotter temperatures and heat bubbles that threaten to destroy the earth. Amid this global heating crisis, Piper lives under the oppressive rule of her mother, who suffocates her even more than the weather does. Everything changes on her eighteenth birthday, when her mother is called away on a mysterious errand and Piper seizes her first opportunity for freedom.

Piper discovers a universe she never knew existed—a sphere of gods and monsters—and realizes that her world is not the only one in crisis. While gods battle for control of the Underworld, Piper’s life spirals out of control as she struggles to find the answer to the secret that has been kept from her since birth.

An imaginative melding of mythology and dystopia, Solstice is the first YA novel by talented newcomer P. J. Hoover.

P. J. Hoover first fell in love with Greek mythology in sixth grade thanks to the book Mythology by Edith Hamilton. After a fifteen year bout as an electrical engineer designing computer chips for a living, P. J. decided to take her own stab at mythology and started writing books for kids and teens. When not writing, P. J. spends time with her husband and two kids and enjoys practicing kung fu, solving Rubik's cubes, and watching Star Trek.
