Interview with Author Cindy Pon

Today the tremendously talented Cindy Pon is here to tell us all a little bit more about Chinese names and how writing her two novels were so different, but equally rewarding.

GC: I loved reading your Chinese Fantasy/Adventure, set in a land of

elusive gods and mysterious evils, what first inspired you to write Ai

Lings story? What do you think influenced the plot and your writing?

CP: I wrote Silver Phoenix because fantasy was always my first genre love

and I had just

begun to study Chinese brush painting. I decided to meld these two

loves and interests

and write a Chinese inspired fantasy. It was the first novel I wrote

so I had no idea what

I was doing. I tend to be a pretty intuitive writer, even into my third novel.

GC: Did you always plan to base the story in a fantasy world that was

influenced by Chinese culture, or did the Kingdom of Xia evolve as you

wrote?

CP: Yes, it was always my intention to have Silver Phoenix be inspired by

the Chinese culture!

I knew very little at the beginning other than that, and that it would

be a heroine's journey,

and it would be about unrequited love.

GC: I pride myself on being a 'Name-Know-I-All,' but I know less than

nothing about Chinese names, their structure, if meaning is important,

ect. Think you can enlighten me?

CP: I'm no expert myself. But the surname or family name comes first. And

the name is usually composed of one or

two characters. Ai Ling's full name would be Wen Ai Ling and Chen Yong

is Li Chen Yong. Usually, names do

carry meaning, or you can be named after someone like a relative with

an exact character in your name or one

that sounds the same.

GC: Did you feel any major differences in yourself sitting down to write

the sequel, than you did when you began Ai Ling's story in Silver

Phoenix?

CP: Yes. Writing Fury of the Phoneix was very different than Silver

Phoenix. I had all the time in the world

with Silver Phoenix. Fury was tough as it was on deadline and I gave

my editor such a rough draft. That

was scary. But in the end, after at least three major revisions, I

think that Fury is the stronger novel. I'm

very proud of it.

GC: Do you have any peculiar writing habits?

CP: I always like to have food and drink close to hand. =) I wrote much of

Silver Phoenix at Starbucks and Fury at my local boba shop that has great

mapo tofu!

GC: What is next for you as an author?

CP: I'm working on another unsold Xia fantasy. it's in the baby baby stage

so I won't

say much more than that.

GC: Cindy, thank you so much for coming on the blog. I can't wait to see

where Silver Phoenix and Ai Ling's story will go next!

My Summary:

Ai Ling was never destined to be an ordinary girl, she was born the reincarnation of Silver Phoenix, the greatest warrior under the sun. Now Silver Phoenix’s greatest battle has become her own and as their fates intertwine, evil is brought before Ai Ling at every turn. Who will be victorious?

My Review:

This book is really awesome; it’s my kind of book. 


We begin with an epic fantasy world with a Chinese vibe backing Pon’s characters who are immediately interesting. Ai Ling has always stood out; she’s cursed, as most women are, by the knowledge that she is too much and not enough. She cannot make an appropriate match and feels destined to live and die alone. When her father goes missing she chooses to leave her home and bring him back. Ai Ling is gutsy, but she must become something beyond courageous. 


I can’t wait to see more of Ai Ling’s transformation in book two, as well as more of Silver Phoenix’s story, which happened two hundred years before Ai Ling was born. I still don’t feel like the two are one, yet, but I trust Pon to connect the dots. 

I was completely drawn into the action of the story and the land, even if they monsters became a bit repetitive. At some point I just felt like the characters were senseless. I wanted to say, "When things feel fishy, guys, it’s because things are fishy, not to mention, possessed by Hell-spirits." I hope that is one of the greater lessons the characters will learn in Fury of the Phoenix.

Also, there needs to be more kissing. A lot more kissing. Ai ling, Chen Yong, get it together!  

Notes on the Names: 

I may be known as the Name-Nerd around the Book Blog’o’sphere, but I know less-than-nothing about Chinese names, so I have invited Cindy Pon to answer my burning questions about all things names in her Kingdom of Xia series. 

Thoughts on the Cover:

I love the hardcover, the colors are vivid and make me instantly think of a fantasy land. The only thing that could have made this cover better is if Silver Phoenix/Ai Ling were holding some kind of weapon in her hands, like Chinese throwing stars, or a Samurai Sword. Yeah, I’m one of those girls... the more butt-kickery, the better!

I am not a fan of the new paperback. It’s too dark and the model almost looks like a modern goth, instead of an ancient warrior-being.

Ai Ling finally defeats her enemy on their wedding night with a kiss.

Ai Ling’s husband is not a “complete man” and he describes the day he became a eunuch. 

Li Rong is sharing intimate time with a beautiful woman when she moves between his legs and when next he looks she has turned into a Demon.

The Mod Podge Bookshelf is One!

This has been a truly remarkable year.

A year ago today I went for it and posted my first review on a blog I had titled spur of the moment. Until the time came to actually name the site, I was planning to call it P.O.V. (Point of Voice). I have no namers remorse, The Mod Podge Bookshelf named itself quite aptly, the name reflects my bookshelves, my

 varied taste in literature, art, music and language. Mod Podge also describes my past year, thrown together in a series of moments that finally allowed me a place to belong, and a safe haven to call my own.

You see a year ago things were difficult, in fact things are still difficult, but I have found a constant amid the tempest, I've found a community and a home.

A year ago I started making friends who were just like me. I want to take a minute and list all of them, individually thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. It is the best and sincerest way I know how to do this. You have each given me a moment, or a series of them, that will mean more than you will ever know:

When girls start going missing in her home town Violet knows she has to find him, the serial killer, but what she didn’t count on was him looking for her, as well.

My Review:

Sometimes when you’re in a reading slump do you ever pick up a book you know you’re going to love so that you can kind of fall in love with reading again?
That is what I did with Derting’s debut novel, The Body Finder, the first chapter of which I read a long time ago.

It’s no secret I’m not one for the paranormal, but when I saw the awesome reviews roll in I knew I had to check this book out! I was not disappointed and could not stop thinking about the unique writing of Derting on behalf of one Violet Ambrose, curly-haired girl extroidinare!

I picked this one up just in time to refresh my love of adventure stories with unique twists and I cannot wait to read the next three installments, beginning with the sequel, Desires of the Dead.

And the kissing? It was good... books always need more kissing, but this book? Well, it almost filled the quota. ; )

Notes on the Names:

Violet has gotten a major resurgence in recent years, mostly due to the lovely Miss Violet Affleck, sister of Seraphina. I had never considered the name before, because it is so popular, but now I can’t get it out of my mind! Violet, Vi-o-let, Violet... Violet! I love it!

Thoughts on the Cover:

Did you know that the massive tissue-paper flowers were designed by the same man who creates the Victoria Secret Angel wings? Cool, right?

With those words Kelly Winslow sets Sonny free, but to what end?

Will love triumph over all, or is some magick too potent to overcome...

My Review:

I was not disappointed by this book. I’m of the mind that you can never be disappointed by your favorite series, or authors. If you are, how can they be your favorites, right?

I still wish that Livingston had done more with Kelley saying she didn’t love Sonny, it felt so pointless because Kelley admits she lied in the first third of the book! Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t want Kelley and Sonny apart, I love Sonnelley, still, I felt like Livingston broke my heart in book two, Darklight, for no reason.

The Shakespeare correlations continue to be the genius, and brilliance, in the Wondrous Strange series. I can never get over how fabulously Livingston executes her own plot as it reflects the themes of the Bard without compromising either story.

I am sad to let this series go. It truly is one of my favorites and I cried when I closed the cover, some books just feel like good friends; this series is one of my best.

Notes on the Names:

I have nothing new too say, other than I love Livingston’s use of names. I want to know what Sonnelley would name their kids, I bet they would be awesome baby-namers.

Thoughts on the Cover:

One of the most gorgeous covers I have ever seen. I really can’t get over this one, every time I look at it I get mesmerized and look up minutes later with a smile on my face. One of those I wish I could claim as my own work.

My Summary:

The day Isabel dies Janet Corcoran gets a second chance at life. 

This is the story of the year after, and how those who loved Isabel’s heart most must let it go.

My Review:

Oh no, another bad review coming y’alls way. I’m not offended by the book, I’m not disappointed with the book and there will be no ranting, I just wanted it to be over, really, and am happy with my decision not to read the final hundred pages or so. 

First of all, the writing is tediously executed. With nearly scientific precision Lovely details the life after the death of every one's beloved Isabel. The writing was good, but it was also very empty, ironically the thing this book was missing was a heart, and most of a soul. The word I would use to describe would be dreary and depressing. No greater truth is being learned, no great good is being accomplished, the characters are defined by their selfishness.

Alex is a horrible character and unaffectedly consistent in his self-absorbed melancholia. If I were Isabel I would have leaped in front of the truck, rather than be married to him. Wow. That was mean, but well written... it stays. 

Janet and David, her husband, are two characters I am a tad regretful for not seeing to the end of things. I thought their strained, love/hate relationship was very interesting, even if I was a bit disappointed they didn’t relish in their second chance at love.

By far my favorite character is Jasper, he is also Lovely’s greatest accomplishment in Irreplaceable. His part to play and his convictions about his heroism in the lives of the main characters is unique, strange and consistent. He is the character you love to hate, or hate to love, depending on where you are sitting. I really thought Jasper’s motives, back story and action were slightly ingenious and something out of the blue in a very positive way.

I got to page 210 and stopped, meaning to come back. I gave up a month later and I can't imagine trying again. Not even for Jasper, or Janet. 

Notes on the Names: 

Alex, Isabel, Janet, David, Sam, Carlie, Bernadette, Jasper... I am shocked by how little I liked this book in light of the obvious effort Lovely put into his names. It’s an anomaly. 

Thoughts on the Cover: I am not a fan of the hardback, thought I think it says more about the book, but the paperback is just gorgeous! I always hate when I end up not liking a book with a beautiful cover because I never want to keep the book... sad face/big sigh.

My Summary:

On the night of her sixteenth birthday Lexi killed for the first time. She killed Steven, her best friend’s brother and her first love. 

Two years later Cole, Steven’s best friend is at her lake, the place she swims and sings her deadly song privately.

Lexi isn’t sure what she is, or why she needs to swim, but she is sure of one thing...

If Cole doesn’t leave soon, she’ll kill again.

My Review:

I love books about mermaid’s and siren’s! I really, really love books about our literary underwater allies. They are so fun!

Ripple is fun, but it also sticks to the beating-the-dead-horse paranormal-romance cliche plot structure we have all come to abhor.

I wanted more from the plot structure, but I couldn’t have asked for a better heroine! I loved Lexi and imagine that she will not be easily forgotten.

In the end bits and pieces felt a tad contrived and I am saddened that some things ended so bitterly, and other things I am really happy to have read! Either way I completely loved the journey, Ripple kept me in my seat, flipping the page, nodding along to Lexi’s internal monologues and wanting more Cole! 


I would read this one whether by the pool, or on the couch, just don't go near any lakes...

Notes on the Names: 

My least favorite part of it all. I don’t think I could have come up with a bigger cliche cast. Haven’t we all heard the names of this clique before? Oh, yes, in our own high schools.

Lexi, Cole, Steven, Kristi, Sienna, Nikki, Patrick, Erik, Danny & Brian. 

Thoughts on the Cover:

Lexi looks so weird. That being said, the details are impeccably done! The lake, the tree, the dress! Oh, my gosh, the dress described is this dress! And Cole is perfect, even down to his ‘over-dressed’ sense of fashion.
